Launch of Multiple Micronutrient Supplement (MMS) Tablets to Meet Nutritional Needs of Pregnant Women and Prevent Stunting

On October 17, 2024, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia launched the Multiple Micronutrient Supplement (MMS) tablets in Bandung City, West Java, as a replacement for Iron-Folic Acid Tablets (TTD) to meet nutrition needs for pregnant women.

In his remarks, Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that, based on research findings, the use of MMS provides a significant positive impact on the health of mothers and babies{rm}. Pregnant women who consume MMS tend to have better nutritional status, and babies born are healthier. This supplement is believed to offer greater benefits because it contains 10 vitamins and five minerals, making a total of 15 essential nutrients for maternal development. When compared to TTD, which contains only one vitamin and one mineral, MMS is far more complete. Diseases affecting pregnant women and children are nutritional diseases, which means their nutrient intake is critically lacking. Out of 4.9 million pregnant women, 27 percent experience anemia, and that is a very high number.

Minister Budi mentioned that the issue of malnutrition among pregnant women in Indonesia has become a concern for his ministry and various global nutrition experts. Therefore, the Ministry of Health together with global health and child welfare organizations such as WHO and UNICEF recommend the use of MMS to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant women. This has been a WHO guideline since 2020, and we are only now beginning to implement it.

In the same event, the Director General of Public Health at the Ministry of Health, Maria Endang Sumiwi, explained that each MMS tablet contains 10 vitamins and 5 minerals. Essential nutrients for pregnant women contained in MMS include vitamins A, D, E, C, B1, B2, niacin, B6, B12, folic acid, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine.

The Ministry of Health targets national implementation of MMS supplementation for pregnant women next year, prioritizing 15 provinces with the highest cases of low birth weight (LBW). It begins in West Java, because this province has the highest number of pregnant women. Each pregnant woman in Indonesia is expected to require 180 MMS tablets over six months. The Ministry estimates that around 900 million tablets will be needed annually to meet the needs of pregnant women across Indonesia. For 2024, a total of 1.3 million bottles of MMS, each containing 180 tablets, have been prepared for distribution to pregnant women, and program socialization has been carried out in selected districts and cities.

To support the sustainability of the MMS program, the Minister of Health Decree Number: HK.01.0/MENKES/1092/2024 concerning Standards for Micronutrient Supplements for Pregnant Women has been issued. In addition, support from the Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) was provided through the issuance of BPOM Regulation Number: 15 of 2024 concerning Amendments to BPOM Regulation Number 32 of 2022 regarding Criteria and Procedures for Health Supplement Registration, which revises the maximum limit for Selenium for pregnant women, allowing MMS tablets to be registered as Health Supplements. The MMS program has also been supported by research conducted by several universities, such as Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Airlangga, and Universitas Hasanuddin.

Until now, MMS tablets are still produced abroad with assistance from various global health organizations such as Vitamin Angel, Kirk Humanitarian, and UNICEF. In the next two to three years, the government expects MMS supplement production to be carried out domestically so that it can meet national needs, and it is hoped that Indonesia will be able to become an MMS supplier for other countries in the future. To support this, a coaching clinic was conducted to strengthen the capacity of local industry in preparing products for government programs, commercial needs, and exports on October 8–9, 2024.
